This position is located in Facilities Management on the MacroTechnology Works site, 7700 S. River Pkwy, Tempe, AZ 85284.

This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include respiratory clearance questionnaire, respiratory fit test and audiogram.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.

Job Description:

Facilities Development and Management, FM KE Facilities Services, MacroTechnology Works (MTW), seeks an experienced Senior Facilities Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to assist in the operation of the MTW research facility.
This position will play a substantial role in the design, operations and maintenance of multiple life safety systems (LSS) and building automation systems (BAS) including fire alarm systems, toxic gas monitoring systems, and control systems associated with mechanical systems up to and including multiple 1000+ ton chillers and cooling towers, large hot water boilers, scrubbed air abatement systems, and various other HVAC mechanical systems.
The qualified candidate should be a registered professional engineer (PE) in the State of Arizona (or able to obtain registration within six months of hire) and highly knowledgeable with the International Building Codes, specifically the codes surrounding fire alarm and toxic gas monitoring systems located/operating in "H Type" occupancies.
Must be proficient in the use of Bluebeam to help with drawing development and design reviews. The individual will also be knowledgeable in the installation of instrumentation and control systems for the support of semiconductor equipment, fire alarm, and toxic gas monitoring systems.
The selected candidate will assist the facilities operations team with defining required preventative and predictive maintenance while helping the operations team troubleshoot issues with the instrumentation and control systems in a 24x7 operational research and development fab including commission testing of new and/or modified systems.
The engineer will be responsible for working with peers from outside consulting firms to help guide and review their proposed designs for modification to the facility. The engineer will assist the operations team with developing the operational budget for the systems that they own and develop plans for improving the operations costs of the system.
Will demonstrate ability to evaluate systems for operational cost efficiencies and develop plans for making energy conservation plans for their responsible systems. A part of the ownership of these systems will be maintaining the databases for fire and life safety systems for available points of connection to manage potential expansion of the systems.

About Macro Technology Works:

Macro Technology Works (MTW) is an advanced state-of-the-art semiconductor research facility located in the ASU Research Park in Southeastern Tempe. MTW provides ASU researchers, private industry researchers, partner companies and start-up operations with office, lab, and cleanroom space appropriate to advance research into semiconductor related processes from basic material research to advanced semiconductor processing.

Essential Duties

Advise site leadership on necessary improvements to existing instrumentation and control systems (JCI Notifier, Yokogawa BAS, JCI Metasys, Ignition, Honeywell Toxic Gas Monitoring, etc).
Conduct design reviews of fire alarm, toxic gas monitoring, and building automation systems for ongoing and upcoming projects.
Sign off new life safety and building controls installations as MTW's controls engineer.
Advise site leadership on necessary life safety system (LSS) and building automation system (BAS) improvements, including working with MTW facilities and other ASU teams in developing long term reliability plans and capital improvement plans for the site.
Working with operations staff to develop and improve upon the existing controls maintenance program for the site, including a transition from preventative maintenance to predictive maintenance.
Develop, maintain, and update sequence of operations, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and controls narratives.
Maintain or work with ASU AutoCAD resources to develop and update P&IDs and network diagrams.
Coordinate with outside entities and key stakeholders at ASU Research Park.
Review and evaluate standard specifications and details used in other jurisdictions for possible adoption by the University.
Attend final inspections and recommend acceptance or rejection of completed work.
Provide technical advice to management and staff.
Formulate standard specification language for controls construction projects. Represents the University on panels and boards as needed.
Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
Evidence of effective communication skills.

Days and Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. May be required to work extended daily or weekend hours depending on activities at site.

Salary rate

$140,000 to $150,000 ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona

Desired Qualifications

Ten (10) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field.
Professional Engineering Registration in the State of Arizona or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
Master's degree in electrical or chemical engineering.

Experience in:

Control in variety of control systems.
Building automation systems.
Fire alarm systems.
Toxic gas monitoring systems.
Equipment controls for variety of mechanical systems including HVAC units, water treatment systems, exhaust systems, chillers, boilers, and cooling water systems.
Consulting experience in the design of advanced technology facilities.
Developing RFP's/RFQ's (request for proposal/quote).

Knowledge of:

Programming of control systems.
Principles of operation of cleanrooms and mechanical systems.
Testing of low voltage systems during commissioning.
Local, state, and federal codes, regulation, and mandates- especially building codes and fire codes.
"H Occupancy" requirements per the International Building Codes and specifically the H5 occupancy.

Ability to:

Troubleshoot and diagnose instrumentation and control systems to assess and adjust or modify to achieve maximum efficiency.
Establish and track overall site capacities and work with management to plan timely upgrades.
Effectively communicate.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
Outdoors in an uncontrolled environment subject to excessive heat or cold, wind, weather, etc.
Advanced research laboratory environments containing hazardous chemicals and processes.
Low hazard cleanrooms involving potential exposure to low hazard chemicals, gases and processes.
Advanced H5 (high Hazard) occupancies utilizing extremely toxic and hazardous gases, chemicals and processes.
Standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances to perform work.
Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.
May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, foot protection, garments, face coverings, and hardhat.
Will involve extended periods of time in cleanroom environment, wearing appropriate cleanroom garb, to include full cleanroom suit, hair net, face mask, gloves, shoe/foot coverings, etc.
Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
Lift, bend and carry objects up to 30 pounds.
Drives university vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
